Lines of Latitude are the Imaginary Horizontal lines running East to West circling the Earth. These lines are Parallels because they are Parallel to each other and never meets.

The lines are shorter towards the Poles.
There are a total 180 latitudes. That is 0 to 90 North in Northern Hemisphere and 0 to 90 South in Southern Hemisphere.
